Meeting Discussion
- Over the summer the BNCA and several local businesses contributed time and resources to improve the garden bed around the Brookland neighborhood sign
- Introductions of officers present
- Attendees include reps from the office of zoning and planning
- Development in the neighborhood is a focus of the BNCA
- Wanted to give a public presentation about rules and regulations applicable to our area
WMATA Development Plans
- BNCA often gets questions about ongoing and upcoming development so this presentation is intended to inform generally about the area and current plans
- Matthew Jesick, DC Office of Planning
- If special approval needed, DC Office of Planning is involved
- Comprehensive plan is currently the guiding force for zoning comission decisions
- Any application needs to be at least “not-inconsistent” with comp plan
- David Maloney, DC Historic Preservation Office
- Program is a combined local and state office
- Designed to encourage adaptation of properties for current use
- Encourages restoration of old landmarks
- Historic preservation plan will be updated at the same time as the comprehensive plan
- New plan will take into account “voluntary preservation”
- Updating Ward Heritages guides to create “Community Heritage Guides”
- Keara Mehlert and Sharon Schellin, DC Office of Zoning
- Zoning Basics presentation
- Explanation of zoning and the office’s role in the city
- Not the same as the Office of the Zoning Administrator
- Review of current zone codes
- Review of factors that determine development standards
Community Input on WMATA Proposal
- Community feedback from the meeting was documented and shared in a letter to Metro officials after the meeting on September 22, 2023.
